The fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8 marked the end of one of the most significant periods in Syria’s history. After years of power struggles, the regime was defeated, and the Assad family was forced to flee to Moscow under Russian protection. Now, a new drama is unfolding in their lives—Asma al-Assad, the wife of the deposed Syrian president, has filed for divorce in a Moscow court, according to Turkish and international media reports.

The Reason for the Divorce: Inadequate Medical Care in Moscow
According to a report in the Turkish newspaper HABERTURK, Asma al-Assad, who has been diagnosed with leukemia, claims that she is not receiving adequate medical treatment in Moscow. As a result, her mother, Sahar al-Atrash, has contacted lawyers in London to arrange her return to Britain, where she can reside due to holding matching citizenship.

However, plans to start a new chapter in London may face legal challenges, as Asma is dealing with accusations of corruption and illicit enrichment, including the appropriation of assets belonging to her cousin, Rami Makhlouf. For example, in secret emails revealed in 2012 at the start of the Syrian crisis, it was shown that Asma purchased a pair of 16-cm high-heeled shoes worth $5,000 (£3,200) at a time when many Syrians lacked fuel to keep their homes warm. Despite these allegations, it has been noted that her personal wealth, combined with her professional experience in international banking roles at Deutsche Bank and JP Morgan, may help her reintegrate into life in Britain.
