Avraham (Avera) Mengistu, an Israeli citizen born in Ethiopia, has been missing since September 7, 2014, after he crossed the border into the Gaza Strip. Mengistu, who suffered from mental health issues, entered Gaza following personal and family difficulties. Despite attempts by IDF soldiers to stop him, he managed to cross the fence and has since been held by Hamas. In 2023, nearly nine years after his disappearance, a video was released showing him in captivity, confirming that he is still alive.
At the conclusion of the rally, it was emphasized that the struggle to bring back the captives is a national one, reflecting the values of mutual responsibility and the commitment of Israeli society to each of its citizens. The hope is that at the next rally, all the families will be able to celebrate the safe return of their loved ones home.
