This morning (Sunday), the Houthis in Yemen launched a ballistic missile towards Israel, apparently in retaliation for a previous Israeli strike on the port of Hodeidah. The event led to the activation of warning systems in central Israel, sending hundreds of thousands of civilians into protected shelters for the first time in months.
The missile, launched from approximately 2,000 kilometers away, was successfully intercepted mid-air by Israel’s Arrow missile defense system. Subsequently, the Iron Dome system intercepted additional debris, causing loud explosions that were heard across central Israel. This dual-layer defense strategy illustrates the complexity of dealing with long-range ballistic threats.
Despite the severity of the threat, no injuries or significant damage were reported. Fragments of the interceptors fell in open areas, causing a small fire near the village of Kfar Daniel. Additional debris fell at a train station on the outskirts of Modiin, but no injuries were reported.

The Houthi threat to Israel is not new. In recent weeks, the Houthis have publicly threatened retaliation for the Israeli strike on the port of Hodeidah. Just last night, the Houthi defense minister warned of “surprises” in the coming days, a threat that materialized with surprising speed.
U.S. involvement in Israel’s defense against threats from Yemen is increasing. In the past two weeks alone, American forces have intercepted at least four ballistic missiles and five drones launched from Yemen toward Israel. The close cooperation between Israel and the U.S. is evident not only in air defense but also in offensive actions against potential threats.
Despite the severity of the threat, Israel’s Home Front Command announced no changes in guidelines for civilians in central Israel. Schools operated as usual, and flight schedules at Ben Gurion Airport were largely unaffected.
This latest event highlights the complexity of the security situation. On one hand, it showcases the impressive capabilities of Israel’s defense systems and its close cooperation with the United States. On the other hand, it exposes the ongoing threat from hostile elements in the region and the need for continued investment and development of advanced defense systems.
