In an act of gratitude, the Municipality of Jerusalem announced this morning (Monday) that it will grant a property tax discount to reserve soldiers who served during the ‘Iron Swords’ war, even if the reserve compensation they received raised their income above the threshold qualifying for the discount.
Until now, reserve compensation was considered income, which prevented many reserve soldiers, especially students, from receiving the discount. Following the court’s decision and the amendment of the property tax discount regulations that came into effect on November 28, 2024, local authorities are permitted to decide whether to grant the benefit to reserve soldiers – and even to apply it retroactively for them.
The Municipality of Jerusalem chose to grant the discount as a token of appreciation for the service of the reservists for the country. In this way, the municipality earned the distinction of being the first to grant this benefit in the country. The municipality says that the discount will be given to reserve soldiers ‘in appreciation of their service for the country, great appreciation, and a warm embrace.
