In an unprecedented move, the Israeli government today approved Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s proposal to award a “Heroism Grant” to the residents of Ofakim, recognizing their resilience during the events of October 7. The decision follows the recommendations of a public committee led by Professor Aviad Hacohen, which was set up to provide compensation to those affected by the events who have not yet received full reimbursement.

The approved grant, set at 7,180 NIS per adult and 1,436 NIS per child, will be given to residents of the city and those who were present in Ofakim on October 7. This decision represents formal recognition of the heroism of the residents of Ofakim, which suffered heavy losses, including the death of 47 residents during the attack.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich emphasized the importance of the decision: “The grants reflect the State of Israel’s recognition of the heroism of the city’s residents and their resilience on that tragic day of Simchat Torah.” He added, “The national strength of the city radiates across the entire country.”

Knesset member Almog Cohen, who actively promoted the grant, described the decision as historic. He noted that “Ofakim is a city of heroes” and highlighted the unity displayed by the city’s residents in coping with the events. Cohen added, “The price we paid is unbearable… but today, the residents receive a heartfelt embrace and recognition for their extraordinary acts of heroism.”

The grant decision is part of a broader effort to address the needs of those affected by the events of October 7, who have not yet received full compensation. It reflects the state’s acknowledgment of the sacrifices and bravery of its citizens during a severe national crisis.

Minister of Labor Yoav Ben-Tzur was also recognized for his significant contribution to advancing this initiative, with the involvement of the National Insurance Institute.
