Romi Gonen, released alongside Emily Damari and Doron Steinbrecher in the first phase of the agreement with Hamas, returned home after more than a year and three months in captivity. Late last night (Sunday into Monday), her mother, Meirav Leshem-Gonen, shared her emotions in a heartfelt Facebook post.
“It will take me, us, a moment to breathe her and believe in the reality we achieved together,” Meirav wrote, concluding her moving post with, “I promise to return.”

Meirav described the emotional and overwhelming day the family experienced yesterday when they received the gift they had waited so long for—seeing Romi again. Despite the joy, she reminded everyone of the 94 hostages still held captive and called for continued efforts to secure their release.
A Long Road Ahead
Romi, along with Emily Damari and Doron Steinbrecher, requires both physical and emotional recovery following their difficult ordeal. The families are focused on providing the space and support the women need to heal.
