Grieving Father Appointed as Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S.

The person chosen to represent Israel in the U.S. has been unanimously approved by the government: Dr. Yechiel Leiter will be appointed as ambassador.

The government has unanimously approved Dr. Yechiel Leiter as Israel’s ambassador to the United States. Leiter is expected to replace the current ambassador, Mike Herzog, on January 24. Prior assuming the role, the two will undergo a transition process. The Foreign Ministry stated that the appointment was made after the Appointments Committee was “greatly impressed by Dr. Leiter, his unique experience, his valued personality, and his good knowledge of the job’s areas and the challenges it faces.”

Leiter is a bereaved father who lost his son, Reserve Captain Moshe (Yedidya) Leiter, who fell in battle in northern Gaza in November last year. Leiter holds a PhD in political philosophy, and is a senior lecturer and researcher at the Shilo Forum for Policy. He has also served in various public roles, including Deputy Director-General of the Ministry of Education, Chief of Staff to the Finance Minister, and Acting Chairman of the Israel Ports Company.

Gideon Sa’ar: “I am convinced he will make a significant contribution to strengthening the most important relationship—with the US”

Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar expressed that that “Dr. Yechiel Leiter brings professionalism, a deep understanding of the relationship between the countries, and a clear commitment to representing Israel’s national interests. I am convinced he will significantly contribute to strengthening the most important relationship of the State of Israel – with the U.S.” He also expressed appreciation for the positive, dedicated, and professional work done in Washington in recent years by outgoing ambassador Mike Herzog.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said he “welcomes the appointment of Dr. Yechiel Leiter as Israel’s ambassador to the United States, our most important partner. Dr. Leiter, a resident of Eli, is a Zionist with a vision, and he and his family have sacrificed and lost their son Moshe, may his memory be a blessing – a respected officer. Leiter brings with him experience and abilities that will help deepen the historical and moral connection between the countries.” In conclusion, the National Security Minister said, “I have no doubt he will act decisively to strengthen cooperation for the future and security of the State of Israel. I wish him great success in his important mission,” concluded the minister.

Netanyahu: “Yechiel Leiter is a talented individual; I am confident he will represent Israel in the best possible way”

Prime Minister Netanyahu said after the decision on the appointment: “Yechiel Leiter is a talented diplomat, an eloquent speaker, and has a deep understanding of American culture and politics. I am confident that Yechiel will represent the State of Israel in the best possible way, and I wish him success in his role.”
