Response to Families’ Requests: Amendment to the Law on Retaining Deceased Individuals’ Phone Numbers

The Ministry of Communications, under the direction of Minister Dr. Shlomo Karhi, announced today (Sunday) a new public hearing aimed at easing the burden on families who have lost loved ones. The new initiative will allow families to extend the retention of a deceased person's phone number for up to one year from the date of termination of the contract with the telecommunications company.

This decision comes in response to numerous requests from families who lost loved ones during the “Operation Swords of Iron” conflict. These appeals highlighted a genuine emotional need for families to maintain a symbolic connection with their deceased loved ones by retaining their phone numbers for a longer period.

Under the new proposal, families who request it will be able to retain their loved one’s phone number for up to a year from the end of their contract with the telecommunications provider. This is in contrast to the current situation, where phone numbers are only retained for a shorter period.

The Ministry of Communications emphasizes that this hearing is intended to examine various aspects of the proposal and gather feedback from the public and telecommunications companies. After the hearing period, the ministry will review the responses and formulate the final guidelines.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Communications to address the unique needs of bereaved families and provide support during the difficult period following their loss. It reflects the ministry’s sensitivity and commitment to addressing human and emotional issues alongside its regulatory duties.

Once the hearing process is completed and the final guidelines are formulated, the Ministry of Communications is expected to issue detailed instructions to telecommunications companies regarding the implementation of the new policy. The ministry has committed to acting as quickly as possible to provide relief to the families in need.
