In Sderot, the first urban renewal project was recently approved, which will be presented to the public this week and will transform the “Palmah Complex” in the center of the city into a modern and safer residential area. The municipality, in cooperation with the Urban Renewal Authority in the Ministry of Construction and Housing, established a dedicated directorate that will manage the developers’ tender and involve the residents in the process.
As part of the project, which is to be carried out on an area of 32 dunams, 131 old apartments belonging to the Amigor company will be demolished, and in their place buildings of up to 10 floors will be built that will contain 515 new apartments. The Urban Renewal Authority will invest NIS 35 million in the project to ensure its economic feasibility. In addition, the project will also include high-level environmental development, including a public garden with an underground parking lot for 500 cars.
The new complex will allow relatively low-density living, and the older public housing residents in the complex will be able to choose between temporary housing and returning to the new apartment, moving to permanent residence in another building, or moving to sheltered public housing.
The mayor, Alon Davidi: “In this challenging time, the first urban renewal project in Sderot symbolizes hope and renewal for our city.
